Let’s face it, to drive a classic car on a regular basis can be a chore unless you’ve done some upgrades. One of those upgrades that gives us a little more confidence in driving our classic cars is to replace the outdated drum brakes. There are options available to install front disc brakes, but some of those options include installing disc brakes from a car of the same or similar generation.

Billet aluminum four-piston calipers from Master Power Brakes: not only do they look great, but they give big brake performance in a small package.
Braking has come a long way since the musclecar era, and often times these factory-type sliding calipers aren’t as good as they could be. As for rear disc brakes, that’s another ball of wax that sometimes requires custom brackets, fabrication, and ingenuity.
There are big brake kits available, but the cost of converting to a big brake kit usually includes a change of another kind: changing the wheels and tires to accommodate those larger rotors.
This can overshoot your budget in a hurry, and you also lose the one thing that still looks great on many classic musclecars: the factory 15-inch steel wheels. Or perhaps you like the look of your vintage aftermarket wheels, like American Racing’s Torque Thrust D, or Weld Racing’s Pro Stars, or any other of a number of classic wheels that have withstood the test of time.
So what do you do? Look to Master Power Brakes and their new Rallye Series disc brake conversion kits. Master Power Brakes has created this line specifically for those who want big brake performance in a package that will fit behind many factory and aftermarket 15-inch wheels. But instead of offering these brakes with a sliding-type caliper, MP Brakes includes billet aluminum, four-piston calipers that provide you with big brake performance – all in a smaller package that allows you to retain your 15-inch wheels. Now, you can have your cake, and eat it too.

Master Power can send you a pdf template that you can cut out to check for clearance. These kits will fit inside most 15-inch wheels.
Check out MP Brakes’ new web site to see what they have for your classic musclecar, and be sure to contact them with any questions or concerns. They can even provide you with a template of their kits that you can cut out so you can measure things up and see if it might fit inside your 15-nch wheels, they would be happy to assist and send out what you need.
If you’re wondering what these brakes perform like, then stay tuned to Street Legal TV because we’ll be upgrading the brakes on our 1965 Plymouth with Master Power Brakes’ new Rallye Series disc brake kits in an upcoming tech article. We’ll be installing disc brakes all the way around, and we plan to keep the Mopar cop car rally wheels and dog dish hubcaps, giving us the performance of modern brakes and keeping the classic look of our musclecar.
