Many of the cars we see on automotive television shows are typically the more popular cars on the road: Mustangs, Camaros, Chevelles, etc. But for this week’s American Restoration show on History channel, Los Angeles-based car builder Bodie Stroud takes on a Galaxie and makes it shine brightly.
But this isn’t just any Galaxie, this is a rare piece of NASCAR and NHRA history is the Galaxie XL fastback with an ultra-rare 7.0L SOHC Ford Cammer engine putting out about 800 horsepower. That makes this very sleeper-like Ford spank pretty much anything else on the road today.
The Cammer has come to be known as the “90 Day Wonder”, according to a recent press release, because Ford put the motor together in just 90 days in the mid-1960s. The intent was to compete in NASCAR racing, but then head of NASCAR Bill France vetoed the engine. That left one other venue for the big Ford: drag racing.
With 800 horsepower on tap, Stroud knew that some upgrades were in order if the car was going to be seeing some street use. Modern Brembo brakes and a BSI custom rear suspension with a four link system will help keep the car planted. The near stock looking wheels are actually oversized wheels from Wheel Vintiques.
Stroud said, “The Galaxie project was fun because I was trying to strike a real balance between classic and modern, I was able to keep the best of the classic look of the iconic Ford Galaxie that raced around NASCAR tracks in the ‘60s, drop one of Ford’s most powerful and legendary engines in it and add modern technology to create something for my customer that no one else has.
If you want to see this beautiful sleeper, tune in to the History channel this Friday, March 11, 2016, at 9/8 p.m. CST for the next episode of American Restoration.
