Check Out Dodge’s Smokey Burnout Ad for the Challenger Scat Pack

In 1968 Musclecar mania was in full swing, across the country every high school parking lot was flooded with Detroit iron and every back road was home to late night street races. Most of these cars were Chevys and Fords. Chrysler wanted to boost their sales of their 1968 Dodge performance cars (1968 Dodge Charger R/T, 1969 Dodge Coronet R/T, and the 1968 Dodge Dart GTS) among the youth.

The marketing department came up with a creative idea, market the cars as part of an exclusive club known as the Scat Pack. In 1970 the Scat Pack evolved into an exclusive fan club which allowed those loyal to the Mopar brand to receive a newsletter and have their cars customized with Scat Pack stripes and decals and parts.

Being a club member gave access to jackets, patches, stickers, hats and a catalog that contained access to members only parts. These parts were Showboat (a dress up kit), Read-Out (custom gauges), Kruncher (drag strip performance package), Bee-Liever (manifold, carb, cam, headers), and Top Eliminator (six-pack setup, electronic ignition and an electric fuel pump). Dodge ended the Scat Pack club in 1971 where it vanished into until now.

Recently Dodge has brought back the Scat Pack for the 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T, Charger R/T and the 4-banger Dodge Dart. Continuing with their 50th anniversary ad campaign, Dodge announced the return of the Scat Pack with an octane fueled, adrenaline pumping commercial. The 30 second ad features a Dodge Challenger R/T 392 performing a big smokey burnout shot in black and white to dramatic music that would fit a fantasy epic.

The Scat Pack Challenger includes three stages of parts which include a cold air intake, cat-back exhaust, a computer which takes advantage of all 392 cubic inches, a stronger cam and custom Scat Pack badges. Other options include two-tone paint and a performance hood.

It seems Mopar understands their market and has no interest in being politically correct when it comes to smokey burnouts.
