Chevrolet released the ZL1 1LE Camaro and LSX Magazine’s Chase Christensen was on hand at Daytona International Speedway for the unveiling. This 3,820 pound Camaro features 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque and seems to be ready to compete with its new nemesis the Hellcat.
This destined to be collector car comes with only one option in the transmission department, a 6-speed manual. For those who love vintage rides, this manual only option pays homage to the great cars of bygone eras. With all of the horsepower and torque, the ZL1 will retain 6-piston monobloc Brembo calipers and the two-piece rotors in front and the 4-piston calipers in the rear. According to Christensen, this braking system is very capable of handling everything the ZL1 1LE dishes out.
However, this new kitty killer features modern suspension components that take the ZL1 1LE Camaro to whole new level of handling. These upgrades include anodized adjustable camber plates, hard mounted front shocks, double ball joint control arms, and a three-way adjustable stabilizer bar.
According to Christensen, the ZL1’s Magnetic Ride Control has been replaced with Multimatic Formula 1-inspired shock absorbers. This shock absorber change contributed to the weight savings, along with other lightweight components used inside and out. Camaro owners and lovers should rejoice with this track ready new variant on the horizon.
The aggressive styling and sheer power of the 6th generation Camaro should give Hellcat drivers something to fear when the 2018 models are released. But does this Camaro give you reminders of musclecar wars from the 1960s and 1970s, or is it too modern to bring about those warm fuzzies from decades past?
