As a car enthusiast yourself, chances are you have a few gearheads to shop for on your Christmas list. The only problem is, what do you get them that won’t break the bank? While we could definitely come up with some pretty stellar gift ideas that none of us would mind getting under the tree this year, a limited budget plays into gift giving most of the time. They may not be glamorous and certainly aren’t as fun as finding a vintage car in the garage under a bright red bow, but these realistic gift ideas will give any gearhead you have to shop for the tools to begin their first or next project for sure.

The first item that every gearhead needs is a shop or trouble light. Like we said, not glamorous but certainly necessary when tinkering under the hood or undercarriage of your project vehicle. While any shop light will do, Summit suggests durable, rechargeable, portable and water-resistant ones that can withstand a tumble into some oil or your adult beverage.

Working on car projects in the garage without a lift can be difficult, but without a jack and some jack stands, projects can be nearly impossible.

For under $50, you can get those gearheads on your list a well-built 2 ¼-ton floor jack like one made by Craftsman. If you’re willing to spend a bit more, some jack stands to go with it are always good, promoting safety in the garage!

Another must for all gearheads are breaker bars. If you’ve ever worked on any sort of project, you know the importance of these and can definitely vouch for this idea. In fact, while you’re at it, you might as well pick up one for yourself because chances are you’ll also need one in the near future. Going along with this is a brass hammer, just in case your gift recipient needs a little extra oomph to break something loose and doesn’t want to deal with the problems sparks in certain areas could create. A set (or more) of vise grips is also a good complimentary gift, because once you get something in place with your breaker bar and hammer, chances are you’ll want to keep it there!

If the recipient of your gift is a little bit beyond the beginner stage of being a gearhead, tools like timing lights and degree wheels can make great gifts. After all, who can say no to upping the performance of your own vehicle with tools used right at home?

Other ideas that Summit suggests include air hoses and an air tool organizer for those gearheads who have access to air tools. But if your gearhead guy or gal does it the old fashioned way, you can’t go wrong with some good wrenches or a ratchet and socket set. More than likely, your car enthusiast pals have lost a few wrenches or sockets somewhere in that mess they call a garage.
