Look, when it comes to building a hot rod, there are projects and there are projects. If you’re so inclined, you can cut a check and have a rolling hot rod chassis show up a few weeks later. With that, just drop in a driveline and you’re ready to cruise.
However, some folks want their projects to be a little more personal and do have the skills to manage it all. Chopping a top and channeling a body are ambitious objectives, but the coolness of the results are undeniable. There is, however, another level and it is one that continues to amaze me with the creativity, fabrication skills and passion that drives it all.
An excellent example of this is a ’34 Cadillac project that is going on in the interior of Canada’s most western province – British Columbia. A member over at KillBillet.com scored a ’34 Cadillac back in September last year and has been working on it since. The member, who posts under the handle “zzrodder” wanted to shorten the car’s 134-inch wheelbase and, in doing so, converted the body from a four door style to an extended two door.
That’s way beyond just chopping the top, although he did that as well. Zzrodder’s build thread there is a great source of information and inspiration for rod builders everywhere. A new chassis has been fabricated and the front end from a donor Malibu installed after converting it to rack and pinion steering.
Interior flooring is just going in now and the gas tank has been custom fabricated to fit exactly where it is needed. There is still a lot of work to complete, but it takes little imagination now to see where this project is headed. Excellence lies at the end of this particular path.
