The all-new 2017 Hyundai Genesis Coupe has been spotted by spy photographers testing in the harsh winter conditions of Northern Sweden. While the test mules are clad in current generation body panels to hide the new design, several interesting details have emerged.
First, the new rear-drive Genesis Coupe will be both longer and wider than the outgoing model, putting its dimensions closer in line with the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. The Genesis Coupe is already offered with either an automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox, but one crucial component has kept the Genesis out of the pony car running since it debuted – an optional V8. However, it looks as though that is about to change, and the motor in question might be even more potent than the current V8 offerings found in the Camaro SS and Mustang GT.
Nabbed from the upscale Genesis sedans, the 5.0-liter “Tau” V8 currently makes 420 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque in those applications (and sounds pretty good while doing it), and rumor has it the powerplant could be massaged for use in the Genesis Coupe to make as much a 450 horsepower. Hyundai is also expected to move the coupe upmarket with some of the premium features found in the sedans as well.
The all-new Genesis Coupe should land in showrooms sometime next year as a 2017 model. So with the ingredients of a two door layout, rear wheel drive, a manual gearbox and a V8 under the hood, could this upcoming Hyundai shake up the muscle car establishment? We’ll just have to wait and see.
