If you like big Sixties “Sportbacks,” have we got one for you. Even better, if you’re a fan of old muscle in period perfect “as found” condition or heavily tinged with the ever elusive “patina”, this 1970 Ford Galaxie XL ticks all the right boxes. Listed on Craigslist in Palm Springs. CA. for $6000.00, this is one heck of a rolling time capsule.
This two ton son of Henry Ford has some serious hardware under its long, creased sheet metal. It’s running a heavily chromed 429 big block with an Edelbrock intake, a C6 transmission with a B&M ratchet shifter and lays the power out to a stout 9 inch Ford (natch) rear end. Seller says it’s not running right now but if you wanna bring by a timing gun (and know how to use it,) it could be back on the road in no time. If you don’t buy it, at least it’ll be running when you leave!
Aside from a couple modern touches like a CD player, this old Ford could’ve have just popped off a rodding magazine cover from the late ‘70’s. The Larry Shinoda styling with hideaway headlights and long, C-pillar sail panels still looks good and the dark blue paint with flames and Cragar SS’s is a nice dollop of icing on the cake. Do the rear quarter windows have flames? It sure looks like it…
The real kicker is the interior. The factory wrap around dash with skinny, single spoke steering wheel is all there, but it’s the frozen in time mods that are really cool. Check out the JC Whitney horse blanket seat covers, fuzzy 8 balls hanging from the mirror, a hula girl, a rear seat replaced with sweet speakers and the coolest homemade plywood and and tufted velour console you’ve ever seen. With toggle switches no less.
After the aforementioned mechanical bugaboos are sorted out, we’d drive the old super sled and not touch a thing. Okay, maybe we’d wash the seat covers…
