The classifieds have pulled through once again, turning up yet another killer GTO project. As we mentioned with the last Goat we bumped into on Craigslist, a half-built GTO is both the perfect gateway into building your own ride as well as a golden-ticket to true muscle car ownership. After all, if you’re after classic American metal, you can’t beat the quintessential muscle car.
While this GTO is mostly complete – needing nothing but a powertrain, brake lines, and some wiring – everything done to get it to its current condition involved quality hardware and commendable craftsmanship.
With a fully powder coated chassis (in incredible shape, according to the owner), as well as a powder coated differential housing and front control arms, the future owner will rest easy knowing the car’s skeleton is fresh, clean, and ready to handle years of abuse. Add that to the poly bushings in the suspension and all the fresh body bushings the seller mentions and you realize that this car makes an excellent base platform, off which you could build damn near anything you want.
As for where to go from here, we can see a number of different paths to take with this Pontiac. To blow doors off at the strip, build up your motor of choice with a Dart block and heads and put some Mickey Thompson meats out back; to build a capable autocross machine, take advantage of the Hotchkis suspension components, tweak the stance for a lower center of gravity and shorten the car’s 4.11 rear-end gear ratio; or, to end up with a weekend cruiser good enough for any show and shine, simply drop in an LS engine like the ad suggests and finish up the electrical with the help of Ron Francis wiring.
Whichever application this GTO is destined for, we have a feeling it will do it well. But what do you think – is this a project you’d like to take up? If so, where would you go with the build? Let us know in the comments below!
