The final event of the 2015 Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational series arrives at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, on October 10-11. Considered the Olympics of road racing, the points won in each class from this last event and the prior event at Road America determine which drivers will get an invite to the final championship event being held in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 6-8 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway the weekend after the yearly SEMA show.
Two-time OUSCI winner and defending champion Danny Popp wants an unprecedented third win in the GTL class, driving his 2003 C5 Z06 Corvette. Popp already has an invitation to the prestigious Las Vegas event, but that’s not going to stop him from continuing to compete in these final two road courses and amass as many points as possible, particularly in the double-point Fontana race.
Popp has won many SCCA National Championships in his career as well as the 2011 OUSCI, and is popular among his fellow racers for his extensive knowledge, friendly and competitive attitude, and mechanical ability. He is the only GTL class racer in the top 20 who will race in these final two events.
Ironically, many of Popp’s competitors will be rooting for him. Since he already has an OUSCI invite, it opens up more opportunities for them, because as long as racers finish at the top of their class and have not already qualified, they will receive an invitation to the Las Vegas event. The next eleven highest point totals will also be invited and have their chance to compete for the overall championship.
Despite having secured a slot at OUSCI, his competitive spirit and desire to learn the most he can about his opponents won’t let him take the easy road. He’ll be the man to beat at Road America, Fontana, and ultimately the season-ending showdown in Las Vegas. For more information on upcoming events, check out the Optima Batteries website.
