In the early 1960’s, the Maximum Performance Wedge (Max Wedge) performance engine was for sale in all B-Body Dodge and Plymouth cars – the Dart, Belvedere, Polara, Fury, and Savoy all offered the 426 cubic inch engine for sale.

1g_800This awesome ’63 Savoy up for sale on ebay not only carries a Max Wedge between the fenders, but has been completely outfitted in Gasser tradition. The fact that the Max Wedge remains to this day one of the most competitive engines in NHRA Super Stock nearly 50 years after they first hit the streets is nothing short if impressive.

At the time of their introduction, the Max Wedge cars were known far and wide as the quickest cars of the day, even though they didn’t necessarily look the part; the body designs they were saddled with left a little something on the table for many buyers. But their 12-second out-of-the-box performance made up for the lack of flash in spades. The engine pumped out 425 horsepower and could turn just about any car on the street into a pair of diminishing headlights.

This Savoy wears a wicked 6-71 Hampton Blower, a pair of fenderwell headers, straight front axle, huge scoop sticking out of the engine bay – it’s all here. The gorgeous car rides on a set of period-correct wide-white tires and Halibrand wheels.

Cw_800There appears to be no stone left unturned – there’s a roll cage and mini-tubs, yet the car reportedly runs on pump gas, and is a driver thanks to the Turbo 400 transmission and built 8 3/4″ rear end.

Coil over shocks front and rear help to control the suspension, and it’s even got power windows and a CD stereo for those nights to the cruise-in. Buy It Now is almost $35 large – which will buy you a brand new Mustang GT, if you’re into that sort of thing. Chances are that you’re not, if you’re reading this post. Happy bidding!!
