Back in 1966 a man must have really wanted to treat himself special, as he spoiled himself with a special ride: a fully optioned 1966 Chevy Chevelle SS396. This numbers matching Chevelle found on eBay was given the full works: the Code 38 Super Sport package which contains the 360 horsepower 396 and a truckload of other options such as a 4-speed Muncie gearbox, factory AC, power steering, power brakes, knee knocker tach, dual exhaust, posi-trac rearend, and believe it or not, a power driver’s seat – even in 1966. Though it’s not listed, it wouldn’t surprise us if the original owner got a copy of the single SS 396 by Paul Revere and the Raiders when he purchased the car.
The 396's deep breathing ports will never sell short.
1966 saw the beginning of the sharper, more sleek styling in the Chevelle, whose smooth contours and broad grill have since become an iconic musclecar look. 1966 was also the first year of the Super Sport 396 performance package.
This package saw the Chevelle roll off the assembly line with a 325, 360 or 375 horsepower depending on what “goodies” were under the hood. The 360 package was capable of 0-60 in 6.0 seconds and a 14.7 second quarter mile. The Chevelle was Chevy’s first musclecar and its all-American looks, deep breathing ported mill and go-fast persona helped make it an American Automotive legend.
This particular SS looks like she once sported a Regal Red paint job and was probably the local king of stop light races. It’s missing the steering column and has a few rust spots that need to be repaired. It would be great to see this beauty restored to her former glory cruising the streets once again. What do you think is the most iconic musclecar of all time?
