eBay Find Of The Day: ’78 Buick El Camino GNX… Say What?

Behold, the '78 El Camino GNX, and no, it's not a Photoshop. Images: eBay Motors

Car customizing has taken on many forms over the last 100 years or so, and we have seen just about everything -until now. While we have stumbled upon “Frankenstein” cars before (a concoction of two or more autos blended together), we had to raise an eyebrow when we saw this, um, “1978/1987 Buick/Chevy GN /GNX /El Camino” that popped up on eBay.  Yep, you read that right, someone swapped an entire factory drivetrain out of an ’87 Grand National and into that of a ’78 El Camino, then grafted on a GNX-style front clip and wheels.

The kicker is that the seller claims the car is “super charged” so we’re fairly certain he/she wasn’t the one who actually pieced this thing together. The identity crisis continues into the interior with a complete Grand National cockpit and gauge cluster, complete with the “T” horn cap from a T-Type Regal.

Apart from the obvious body alterations to what will always really be an El Camino, the only modification to the Buick drivetrain appears to be a cold air induction kit. Even the “stock” exhaust remains in place. We think it’s an admirable attempt, and though the seller admits that it isn’t perfect, rating it an “8 out of 10,” there are a few idiocies with the mish mash of parts.

The most obvious that caught this author’s eye (who happens to be a GN owner), was the Trans Am center caps on the “GNX wheels,” the T-Type front bumper molding (plus the aforementioned horn cap), and the missing “BUICK” grille emblem. We also believe that if you’re going to build a clone of a GNX from an El Camino (of all things), that one should spring for the ASC extended wheel arches of said model.

Little else is known about the Chevy/Buick cruck, since the seller offers seldom information other than what power features the vehicle is equipped with, and amount of mileage on the odometer. For having a Buy-It-Now of $13k, it isn’t a terrible price, but it would be nice knowing that we would be able to drive it home without worry of getting a seatbelt ticket. Bid cautiously on this one…
