There are a lot of people out there that believe the muscle car era started in 1964 with these words: “Pontiac GTO.” While we have absolutely no desire to open up that can of worms at the moment we will most definitely admit that the GTO is a icon in automotive history! The black ’68 that we found here on eBay is an ultra rare example of one of the famed Goats as it is one of only 92 every produced with the Ram Air package. The car is even more rare in the fact that is is one of only 5 black convertibles produced with the Ram Air package, which was documented by PHS (the Pontac Historical Society).
The GTO is all original and still retains it’s matching-numbers drivetrain consisting of a 400 cubic inch 360 horsepower engine, 4-speed close-ratio Muncie transmission, and a huge 4.33 posi-geared factory 12-bolt rear end.
It’s also a factory power-steering equipped car, which Pontiac called “wonder touch,” has front disc brakes, rally gauges with a tach, and factory tinted glass all the way around.
While the car may look perfect in the pictures the seller does note that is a “Strong 2” in appearance, meaning the paint is not perfect and it may have a few little modern touches that are not period correct, such as radial tires.
That means that those of you wishing to make an “investment” car purchase will need to put a few bucks into the little details to get her up to a Stage 1. We have no idea what price the car will go for, but with the rarity this triple-black Goat has we’re guessing it won’t be a small number.
