Check out the baddest, weirdest Pro-Touring build that recently popped up on eBay. The “Silver Bullet” is a street legal 1986 Grand Am that’s been treated to a radical make-over by Ohioan Dave Thomas and let’s say this isn’t your ordinary malaise era GM N-Body with a Quad 4.
First off, Thomas ditched the frumpy old smog motor and FWD transaxle and bolted in a roller Chevy 406 longitudinally into a M/S chassis and switched over to RWD. The motor has a laundry list of hi-po goodies including aluminum heads, Dart-Wilson intake, and a 850 Demon carburetor. Power is delivered to the pavement via a Turbo 350 and a 9 inch, Posi rear end with 4:10 gears.
Running gear includes strut suspension, Wilwood rack and pinion steering and binders, and huge rear slicks and skinny donuts courtesy of Hoosier Tire. The body sports racing seats, a full roll cage with driver halo, fuel cell, tubbed wells and a slick fully Dynamatted and carpeted custom interior. The polished aluminum fabrication work inside the car is especially skillful. All this tips the scales at a bantam 2150 lbs and with 650-700 Hp on tap, it recently turned 9.9 @ 140 MPH in the 1/4 mile.
Seller admits “It’s a tad loud,” but says it’s street legal down to turn signals and headlight dimmer. Currently located in Tuscon, Arizona the asking price is $27,000.00 and you can be absolutely certain you won’t see another one like it. The work looks to be meticulous and the seller says only the best of the best was utilized in the build.
Is that enough to overcome the malaise pedigree and the hunchback, er I mean notch back styling representing the dimmest period in GM history? Only time will tell. If nothing else, this build is proof positive that any car looks better with monster cheater slicks.
