It has been a great year for car guys. Earlier we were treated to the all-new C7 Corvette, and now we get Ford’s reveal of their also-all-new Ford Mustang to help celebrate the brand’s 50th anniversary in 2014.
And the early returns on the new designs say Big Blue has a hit on its hands.
The redesigned Mustang has an all-new body, new suspension and even a new engine option. It still retains many of the Mustang’s signature features and even resenbles the previous generation, but there are definitely more than a few modern touches in the new fastback body. That musclar look is enhanced by the fact that the car is 1.5 inches wider overall (the rear track is nearly three inches wider) and 1.4 inches lower than the 2013 model. The classic fastback body shape is back, but the Fusion-inspired front grille and steeply raked rear is all new.
Underneath, Ford has ditched the live rear axle and gone with an independent rear. That’s welcome news for the sports car enthusiasts, but not exactly what the drag racers will want to hear. Ford says the front suspension is also new, but exactly what is different we’ve yet to hear.
Along with the drool-worthy 5.0 liter Coyote engine, Mustang buyers will also have the option of the current base model V6 or a new turbo four-cylinder Ecotec engine. The liter four banger will have direct injection and displace 2.3 liters–the same as the Ford four cylinder engine from the ’70s and ’80s. We don’t have official numbers for this new engine yet, but estimates are around 300 horsepower and 300 lb/ft of torque.
But, of course, see is believing, so take a few moments to check out these photos of the new car, and we’re also including a couple very interesting videos Ford created describing the development of the new Mustang.
