Barn and garage finds are incredibly intriguing, each one with a unique story behind it. Some of these stories are known while others remain a mystery. For years these cars are either locked away in some windowless barn, or they sit outside somewhere braving the elements hoping to be rescued before it becomes a heaping pile of rust. Another vintage 1967 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 has been discovered at an abandoned Colorado ranch where it had been left to sit for years.
Rich Barnes was out and about in Central City, Colorado wearing his Ford jacket when he was approached by a man with some knowledge about a classic Mustang. He said that the Mustang was painted “blue with white stripes” which sparked Barnes interest thinking that this could be an original Shelby. The classic pony was sitting at OK Corral ranch and the family was liquidating the property due to the death of the owner, Rodger Hall, who had recently passed away. Always known for his love for Mustangs, Hall messed around with the electrical system of the Shelby but never could get it running. It was then left as is and forgotten.
Intrigued, Barnes made the drive out to the abandoned ranch to see the car for himself. Once there, he noticed the big-block 428 Police Interceptor complete with dual four-barrel carburetors. What stood before him was a true Shelby GT500 that had been left to rot. To Barnes surprise, the car wasn’t in horrible shape with some minor rust and a little body damage. Not knowing the value of the car, Barnes gave the son and daughter of the late property owner an offer that they couldn’t refuse.
“They were kind of shocked and surprised that the car was possibly worth that much”, said Barnes, adding, “I could have probably gotten it for a little less money, but I didn’t want to insult anybody or come across like I’m trying to rip them off or hurt their feelings.”
