Found In A Field: ’79 Trans Am

You see them from time to time; those dilapidated cars that someone abounded on the side of the road leaving them for dead. Typically left in someone’s yard under the false pretense of “someday getting restored,” these cars are crying out to be rescued by someone with cash and a whole lot of determination to bring them back from the brink.

Over the years, many of these cars have been pulled out of the fields and garages for restoration, but many, many more still remain waiting for their big moment. As the newer cars age, they often suffer the same fate. Such as is the case with this ’79 Trans Am we found over on the Cars in Barns website.

Little details are known about the T/A, such as mileage, which engine it has, etc. But according to “Joel from Illinois” who rescued the abounded F-body, it is a one owner car. Since the factory decals and front corner air dam pieces are missing, it’s probably been repainted at least once in its life.

Being the Trans Am enthusiasts that we are, we can tell you that given its base model Rally II wheels and red interior, it’s not a collectible SE or 10th Anniversary Edition that has been sprayed another color. Trust us, we’ve seen it happen.

As such, it more than likely has the 185HP Olds 403ci engine, or worse, the 150HP Pontiac 301. Judging by the few pictures we have, the body appears relatively clean apart from some rust along the door edges -typical for a car from the Midwest. We congratulate Joel for stepping up and taking on this restoration project, and we’ll continue to bring you finds such as these ion the future.
