When I was a kid, I remember sitting in the back of Mom’s ’72 Buick Estate Wagon (the middle seat, of course) and watching hot cars peel out from the intersection when the light turned green. All of ’em were jacked up with Ansen Sprint mags and God-knows-what-else.
Stumbling upon this Up in the Rear blog that was featured in Just A Car Guy brought back some memories from my youth.
When I obtained my driver’s license, I remember trolling through the neighborhoods in Claymont, DE looking for some of the very same hot cars I used to see from Mom’s back seat.
There was a lady with a bunch of GTOs although she was too “adult” for those hi-jinks; however, I did manage to find a ’70 Cutlass with mags, spoiler, and stars and stripes along the rear.
It must’ve been five years since I had last seen that car. Over in Green Acres, a guy names Jim spray painted “Jim’s Ram IV GTO Bad” by the highway overpass.
The ’70 through the ’80s were a unique time for performance cars because they weren’t making ’em in Detroit anymore due to emissions, plus the gas crises rendered them undesirable. Looking back, some of the modifications seemed to be lacking in taste, but everyone seemed to be having fun.
