New hot rod events are popping up every year in the automotive world, but the best events are those that celebrate the historic events of yesteryear. The Hot Rod Hill Climb held in Georgetown, Colorado is such an event.
Last year, Mike Nicholas of Nick’s Garage brought the historic Hot Rod Hill Climb back to the Colorado mountains to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first Hot Rod Hill Climb event and we were there to capture all the action.
This year, the event is back and will once again celebrate an important anniversary- the 60th anniversary of the second and final running of the historic event. Be sure to register your vehicle for this iconic event now in order to secure your position in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The original Hot Rod Hill Climb kicked off in the summer of 1953, following a hill climb display in the summer of 1952 by area sports car owners. Not only were the hot rodders involved determined to make their mark on the hill climbing sport, they were also determined to out-do their sports car comrades, both of which they accomplished in ’53. Unfortunately, the Hot Rod Hill Climb was short lived as 1954 acted as the final year of the event. Luckily, that’s not where the historic event’s story ends.
Last year we braved the flooded Front Range to visit Georgetown for the 60th Anniversary Hot Rod Hill Climb event and encountered more enthusiasm than we could have ever expected. With 50 1950s era rides taking part in the event, Georgetown was filled with hot rod enthusiasts including some of the very legends that competed in the historic event 60 years prior.
With such a great turnout last year despite Mother Nature, Nicholas is bringing back the Hill Climb for 2014 to once again celebrate the iconic 1950s hill climb events. This year, the event will take place in the center of Georgetown on September 13th with a pancake breakfast, live 50s music, a 50s style pin-up contest, valve cover races, and of course, the hill climb race up Guanella Pass.
Applications to run your 50s-era (that means engines too) ride are being accepted now, with only 50 race slots available spots are sure to fill up quick. Don’t have a 50s ride to run? No worries, you can bring your pre-1965 vehicle up and enjoy all the fun as well.
We had an absolute blast up at the Hot Rod Hill Climb last year and this year’s event is sure to be just as great. Don’t miss your chance to participate in this unique event and help make history in the hot rod community once again! Register today!
