Holley has been the industry leader for fuel systems for over 100 years, giving them the opportunity to touch so many people’s lives. Whether it’s through the company’s carburetors appearing on every Sprint Cup Series car over the last few decades, or being the brand you use under your own hood, the Holley name is unmistakably recognizable. That’s why it should come as no surprise that dozens of Holley-equipped vehicles currently appear in the company’s “Virtual Car Show.” But it’s not just the Holley products that make these cars special. It’s also the stories that go with them that make them unique, just like the story behind this Holley-equipped Plymouth GTX.
We first caught wind of this GTX through Holley’s monthly “Gearhead News.” Featured right smack dab on the bottom of the page, this GTX has a good ‘ole American story many of us can relate to.
The car belongs to Holley tech representative Ricky Richter. Back in 1977, Richter bought the GTX from its original owner for what is described as “a killer deal.”
Just one year later, the car became a special delivery vehicle of sorts, transporting Richter’s son home from the hospital. The family ties to the vehicle continued on for years with Ritcher’s son using the car to go to prom, in his wedding and to bring his own two children home. Ritcher’s daughter also used the GTX to bring her three kids home from the hospital (those are some lucky grand kids if you ask us, taking their first ride ever in a classic Plymouth GTX).
The car has also been used in music videos by country band Diamond Rio and Christian rock band Guardian, as well as in a commercial for Royal Purple and an episode of MuscleCar Flashback.
Over the years the GTX has retained its original 440cui engine, but has been upgraded with Holley components. The Holley Custom Shop was enlisted to restore the original Carter 6-pack carburetors for the vehicle while Richter opted to use three Holley 2-barrel carburetors in place of the induction.
The GTX is full of memories and the car wouldn’t be the way it is today without Holley. With the car being left as it is, there’s no telling how many more memories will be made for the Richter family in this Holley-equipped classic.
