Filmed with old school reel-to-reel camera equipment, this grainy, skipping bit of visual history is a great look back through the years at a time when things seemed just a bit more simple. This impromptu street race takes place sometime in 1975 out Route 21 in Clifton, New Jersey, not too far off from Rutt’s Hut, known for it’s famous “Ripper” hot dog (earning its name as the skin tears and crinkles as it’s deep fried), possibly one of America’s greatest hot dogs.

Anyways, the showdown is composed of YouTube user Insettajohn’s ’66 Ford Fairlane powered with an impressive 14:1-compression 427 side-oiler up against a ’68 440 Plymouth Road Runner. Undoubtedly, the Fairlane is no stocker, although a R-Code package Fairlane would provide Ford’s intermediate segment muscle car with the venerable 7-liter, as well as the ’68 Road Runner, which was only available with either a 383 or 426 HEMI for that model year; the 440 RB-Block being offered the following year.

The high-compression Fairlane clearly gets the jump on the torsion bar-and-leaf spring Mopar, but the ‘Runner is able to catch up quickly appearing to pull ahead as the pair near the overpass. To our eyes, the Plymouth takes it, but as Insettajohn announces – as you might expect – the Ford wins by a nose in the end. We’ll let you be the judge.
