Iconic Steel: This 1958 Cadillac Has A Storied Past

58CadillacBrougham_4Beyond looking like the neatest combination of “purple” and “Cadillac” this ’58 Cadillac has some interesting history tied to it and it involves a certain crooner from Hoboken, New Jersey.

That’s right, this ’58 Brougham was once the personal property of Frank Sinatra. It reportedly even made its way onto the big screen in Ocean’s Eleven, in the scene where the singer stumbles drunkenly out of the casino and falls onto its hood (it was a different color back then, however).

Eventually, Sinatra sold the car to a Venezuelan boxer, who sold it to a bar owner in Hermosa Beach, California, before the car finally wound up in the hands of Steve Drale in Torrance, who opted to have the car restored in the way he saw fit. Fortunately, Drale had the know-how and resources to fulfill that mission.

The car had been through a couple of mishaps over the course of some seven years before Drale came to own it. A missing grille and chipped paint were the most important issues that needed fixing and Drale was just the man to do it. He quickly had a replacement grille installed and sanded the paint off with the help of friend Joe Hurst.

58CadillacBrougham_3The car was unfinished by the time the local 1965 Tridents Rod Customs Autorama opened but did little to discourage Drale. Instead, he transported the Caddy over to the show and put on a display to his fellow hot rodders on how to assemble a custom car.

58CadillacBrougham_2Some time later, it received this brilliant purple hue courtesy of Larry Watson, owner of Watson’s House of Style in Hollywood. By this point, Drale had become bored and frustrated by the Brougham, having attempted to do a full restoration by himself. It changed hands a couple more times before coming to rest with Jeff Cohen, a car restorer who put the car back in one piece in 1969.

We’re not sure what became of the coupe after that, but we do know this: that color looks damn good on a ’58 Cadillac Brougham. Agree or disagree? Hop down below and give us your thoughts.
