Jalopnik Hashes Out Best Movie Car and Character Combos

If you’re into car movies, there is no doubt that you have a favorite character and car match. Jalopnik asked readers in their “Question of the Day” segment what the ten best car and movie character combos were. Chosen by your peers, the car/character combos that made the top ten show that older car movies remain the favorites of car enthusiasts.

Jalopnik’s Question of the Day poses questions to their readers every day. Once the answers have been tabulated, they are presented on the website in the Answers of the Day segment. Results are not weighted or construed- just brought to you in their entirety for your enjoyment. With the latest question posed, ten movie car and character combos rose to the top of many car enthusiasts’ lists. Even cooler is that Jalopnik included clips of each dynamic duo, giving us a refresher course on just how cool the car-movie pairs still are.

Topping off the list is Mad Max and the last of the V8 Interceptors. Adding to his anti-hero antics, Max’s jet-black muscle car gave even more mystery to the movies that featured them both. Second place went to the stars of Bullitt, the character himself and his V8 Mustang.

Although a notable Charger also appeared in the movie, it is the Mustang that really made the movie what it was. Although a bit different than the rest, coming in at third was Doc Brown and his DeLorean from Back to the Future.

While it may not be a muscle car, we can still respect it as a cool time machine. Who can forget Batman and the Batmobile? The iconic pair have been fighting bad guys for generations and the Batmobile never fails to impress with tons of gadgets and a stealthy look. That is why the pair finished fourth.

Rounding out the top five is the crew from Vanishing Point, particularly Kowalski and his supercharged Challenger. The odd pair helped create the counterculture nonsense that the movie is known for.

Starting out the later five pairs is Bandit and his Special Edition Trans Am. For F-body fans, there was no better movie car and character pair. In seventh place, is James Bond and his Aston Martins. Appealing for the nerdy to the sophisticated charmers, Bond’s Astons remain icons in car movie culture still to this day. If you’re of my generation, you Gone in 60 Seconds as a Nicolas Cage movie. Falling in eighth place, however, is Maindrain and the ‘73 Mach 1 known as Eleanor from the original movie. Looks like Cage and his GT500 just didn’t hold the candle to the original duo.

A car from one of the more modern movies of the top ten takes ninth place in the form of the Ferrari in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. With dreams of the car, Bueller brought to light our own dreams of unleashing those cars destined to a life in a garage. Not to be forgotten, in tenth place is The Duke and his Cadillac Fleetwood from Escape From New York. As a car with chandeliers and a disco ball, it may not have been our pick for the best car, but it sure was “cool.”

While the results for the ten best movie cars and characters aren’t all that surprising, the reminder of these iconic pairs was well worth the read. Anyone else planning a good old-fashioned car movie marathon tonight?
