Auto boneyards have always been a religious experience for car guys and gals. Hallowed ground if you will. When we look across the yard, we can’t help but wonder who owned the cars and what events led these machines to their last stop before the crusher. As car enthusiasts, it’s also sobering to know that the cars we love and cherish were ultimately designed to be disposable, part of the cycle of “planned obsolescence.” Discovering a rare model or finding the part you been scouring the country for is just icing on the cake.

So check out Jalopnik’s “The Ten Best Junkyards” list. Not just in the US, but from around the world. Two are in Russia, another in Switzerland, the rest in the US, mostly Arizona. There’s even an airplane boneyard on the list. It’s called AMARC, or the Aerospace Maintenance And Regeneration Center. One yard even has competitions to build fireboats and submarines out of junked parts and whatever else can be found.

We think my favorite is the Corvair Ranch in Gettysburg, PA. The site of all those oddball Corvair carcasses is really intriguing. We also like the Russian junkyards too. Not only for the military vehicles and weirdo Soviet versions of 50’s Buicks, but they also managed to get a pretty girl to pose on the hood of a rusting hulk. Is a calendar in the works?
