Jalopnik’s Top 10 Greatest Cars Named for Cities

We may hat to admit it, but sometimes we see something from another media source that is (choke) actually pretty great. Our friends over at Jalopnik put together a list of the Top 10 cars ever named for a City, and (choke, cough, choke) it’s so good that we need to share it with you!

10. Auburn. The Auburn automobiles represented a city and a country on the verge of its greatest century. Inspired by the stately European style, the cars are somehow still energetically American.

9. Ferrari 360 Modena. Modena is called the “city of engines” because of its long history of producing powerplants for automakers. The 360 Modena manages to squeeze up to 400 hp out of the 3.6-liter V8. Plus, it sounds freaking awesome when it’s wound out.

8. Chevy Bel Air. The Chevy Bel Air used to be the standard of an American made car with it’s full size, pep, and great looks. Unfortunately, the city of Bel Air is a place with big money now filled with tiny women with even smaller dogs driving Bentleys.

7. Lancia Montecarlo. We know, it isn’t the Chevy, and that’s for a reason. The city of Monte Carlo is a wealthy little principality that’s the sandbox of the rich, so only Lancia can build a car named Montecarlo because only exceedingly wealthy people could afford to pay someone to keep it running. You could fix the Chevy Monte Carlo with a candy bar, so it’s just not pretentious enough to give it top billing.

6. Chrysler New Yorker. Big, brash, in-your-face, expensive, unnecessary, better than you, typically gray, not actually from New York.

5. Mercury Montego. Blue skies, blue water, luscious green vegetation and beautiful people. Montego Bay is just a little nicer than the rest of Jamaica, but we’d argue that David Pearson’s Montego is cooler than the city.

4. Maserati Indy. Maserati is a name more associated with women who married well and divorced better than racing these days, but for a while they were among the best. In honor of back-to-back victories at the Indy 500 in the 1930s the Italians built this beautiful, V8-powered four-seat sports car. It’s a stunning tribute.

3. Ford Torino. That’s right folks, Tonino is actually a city. It’s in Italy, but we’ll admit we have to Google it to be sure. The picture here is of a three Torino Talladega’s taken by Richard Fleener, so this one counts for two cities.

2. Alfa Romeo Montreal. Does agree with the beauty of Montreal, and probably the sex life too. And the V8? Probably lives up to the drunk life of everyone in Montreal.

1. Dodge Charger Daytona. Nothing sums up what NASCAR is all about than the city and the Dodge that were both named Daytona. The entire NASCAR world revolves around Daytona, and the ’69 Charger Daytona was purpose built to rule NASCAR.
