Jay Leno is jumping on a new car gig on CNBC next year. Us car enthusiasts are not that surprised knowing that Jay is an avid car collector with over 130 cars and 90 motorcycles gracing his 101,000+ square foot garage. We are familiar with Jay’s Garage from his YouTube channel, and often bring you episodes that we find appealing.
Jay’s new car show is said to be centered around car stories, driving, history, and investing, of course. When asked about how much money is in Jay’s collection, he tells the reporter that he has no idea. “I think its safe to say that whatever it is, it has doubled or tripled in value certainly,” says Jay.
Comparing collecting automobiles to collecting artwork, Jay points toward a McLaren F1 sitting in his garage and mentions that he paid $800,000 for the car back in 1998, but today the car is worth $11-12 million dollars.
When asked if he purchases cars for investment opportunities, Jay says, “I don’t look at it as an investment at all. I buy what I like. The nice thing is, if you’re reasonably knowledgeable and buy what you like, chances are that other people will like it too.”
According to Jay, he appreciates all car makers in America saying that people don’t realize how hard it is to create cars from the ground up here in America. The reporter confirmed that Jay was a bit upset with the hype over car fires in the Tesla models considering how many fires happen with internal combustion engines.
“We reached the point in America now where success is sort of jeered and people who fail are what people can see. We are like the English now where we become so jealous or we nitpick, and what Tesla has done is pretty amazing. Cars that go out of business like Oldsmobile, Pontiac or whatever, here’s a guy starting a brand new car coming from scratch and becoming extremely successful with it, so I think it’s wonderful. It’s really what America is all about,” says Jay.
We can’t wait to see what Jay Leno has in store with his new car show! Are you going to be sure to tune in?
