Some of you may be old enough to remember Return to Macon County, the 1975 drive-in B-movie hit. It starred Nick Nolte and Don Johnson as two buds who spend the summer of 1958 trying to get to the NHRA Nationals in California, where they will race their banana yellow & flamed ’57 Chevy 210 (which keeps burning oil).
By some miracle, this ’57 Chevy is capable of pulling 8.7 second runs on skinny bias ply tires. Perhaps the car is able to do this thanks to its unexplained “injection.” The two brothers are joined by this weird psycho chick as they stop in Macon County (decades before its overrun with walkers) for some street racing and later they are chased by a crooked sheriff.
The 57 as it looked in the movie.
The real specs of the ’57 Chevy are a Paxton Blown fuel injected 283 under the hood mated to a 3-speed manual. Most likely this motor would have only be capable of pulling 15s in the quarter, not 8 second passes. Like many Hollywood cars, the flamed ’57’s whereabouts where unknown for decades. Turns out, the car was tucked away in a garage in rural Kentucky and for the most part remains unchanged – its flamed yellow paint job is still there though it’s somewhat faded. The car looks like it has been sitting, without being driven for a long time as the ceiling vinyl is hanging, and the car is covered in a layer of dust and bird crap.
We aren’t sure what the owner plans to do with this car; perhaps he plans on getting it running again to compete in the Hot Rod Heritage Nationals in California. What would be your plans if you could pick this baby up for yourself?
