It’s probably safe to file this one under “Things You Don’t See Everyday”. Unless you do, and if that’s the case, we want to visit this crazy fantasy world of Oldsmobile big block V8s mounted in the bed of vintage Mazda rotary pickups that you live in.
While the tail gate boldly denotes this 1974 Mazda truck as a running under rotary power, a quick glance into the bed of the truck reveals a slightly different story. The original motor has been pitched, and in its place, well, there’s a gas tank and battery. But out back the truck now gets power from a 455 Olds motor that’s been bored out to 468 cubes.
Kieth Black pistons and rods, a polished crank, Schnieder camshaft, Edelbrock intake with a Demon 750 carb and HEI ignition all add up to a powerplant that makes this Mazda “fast as hell” according to the seller, and we do not doubt that claim.
The gearbox is a THM425 out of an Oldsmobile Toronado and we’re glad to hear there’s a set of disc brakes present up front as well.
Like most projects of this kind, the seller is quick to add that it could use some TLC, but considering the $6000 asking price, as well as the inclusion of a vintage Offenhauser dual quad intake and various other extra bits and pieces, this sounds like a pretty great deal for someone who wants a street machine that’s closer to the definition of a sleeper than most builds that sport the label.
