Looks like Mitt Romney got himself into a little trouble recently by mentioning that his wife has a “couple of Cadillacs…” The media went crazy and called it another indicator that the mega-rich businessman was living a lavish lifestyle and was out of touch with ordinary Americans. USA Today brings us the story.
The Cadillacs he spoke of are a 2007 and a 2010 SRX, which currently starts at around $35,000. Before we get all patriotic, assembly of the latest version of the SRX was outsourced from Lansing, Michigan to Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, so technically it’s an import. But at least he’s driving an American brand. Most guys his age and income level have long since abandoned domestic luxury makes for German and Japanese marques. He also revealed that he drives a Mustang and a Chevy pickup truck.
His loyalty to Big Three brands makes sense when you dig deeper into Mitt’s background. The son of former Michigan governor and American Motors CEO George Romney, Mitt has deep roots in the US auto industry. Raised in upper crust Bloomfield Hills, sent to the best schools and groomed for greatness, he’s about as close as you get to Detroit royalty, this side the Ford family.
It’s all well and good, until you look at his record regarding “saving” the US auto industry in 2008. He was against any government bailout and thought GM and Chrysler should go through bankruptcy privately. This has come back to haunt him as he campaigns through UAW states and will linger in peoples minds long after the dual Cadillac debacle fades away.
At least it wasn’t two Hyundai’s…
