Museum Restores Rare 1993 Black Rose Corvette ZR-1

The National Corvette Museum in Kentucky is currently working on a rare 1993 Black Rose Corvette ZR-1. Most enthusiasts know the C4 ZR-1 was a performance monster in its day, but this specific car is famous for its paint job. General Motors only built 11 of them in this deep purple hue for the entire model year. It is an incredibly rare sight, and the museum staff wants to make sure it looks and drives exactly like it did when it rolled off the assembly line over 30 years ago.

The restoration crew did not just start polishing the fenders immediately. The folks there began underneath the skin to make sure the machine actually functions as intended. The team replaced the aging fuel pumps and the entire braking system to ensure safety. It also swapped out the clutch assembly so the car can drive under its own power without issues. The goal is to keep the mechanical parts functional so the car can be demonstrated for visitors in the future rather than just sitting static.

Once the running gear was sorted, the team moved to the cosmetic side. The body was taken apart and hand-sanded all the way down. It was a long, labor-intensive process, but it was necessary to get the surface perfect. Painters laid down two coats of base color, followed by two coats of clear to match the original factory depth. The museum notes that the Black Rose Corvette is currently in the final wet sanding and buffing phase to bring out the mirror finish.

This project highlights exactly what the National Corvette Museum does best. Located just down the road from the main assembly plant where these cars are born, the facility works hard to keep the history of the brand alive. Preserving a car like this takes patience and skill, but the result saves a moment in time for the automotive world.
