Back Seat Bingo by Rumble Seat Riot from Luminary Creative
The video for Back Seat Bingo, by the band Rumble Seat Riot, combines several elements of the Rockabilly lifestyle. There’s great clothes, girls with the right kinds of curves, tattoos, and of course what interested us most, some very cool cars.
The video itself has that kind of short story, short film vibe. It starts off with a father and son in an old garage. It’s a dream scenario for many of us as dad is telling his teenage/young adult son about grandpa’s old racecar and how grandpa never lost a race behind the wheel. The cover’s pulled off to reveal a slick looking Roadster, with just enough patina to seem plausible. The car has a flat head V8, three carbs, bomber seats, whitewalls and sidepipes. With the exception of the more modern appearing alternator, it jives with dad’s tale fairly well.
While most of us would have loved to inherit such a project at a young age, the young man in the video is less enthused. Instead of excitement he shrugs to his father and says “Thanks Pop.” Flash forward to the next scene and we see the roadster rumbling down a suburban street, our young hero at the wheel. He’s rejected by the girl he came to take for a ride, she takes off in the latest import driven by another guy, her “friends” as she calls them.
Seeing this her neighbor takes the young man under his wing and seems to enter him in what looks like a shady affair, although we find out later it’s all harmless fun. Notice the shop they stop at as he fronts some cash to an old man standing behind a roll around tool box. There’s even a very big radial aircraft engine on a hoist in the background. Makes you wonder what they’re working on here, and who’s the old man?
We flash forward to a field or farm party and you find out that the neighbor is also the lead singer of the band. The place quickly fills with some people in appropriate rockabilly attire and some great looking rides. There’s plenty of old trucks, old cars and even an old man watching in the distance from a vintage bike.
Later on the video also features some arm drop drag racing done at the party. There’s plenty of engine noise, and to us this party just keeps getting better and better. Our young man continues grandpa’s winning legacy behind the wheel of his roadster, and of course the girl he’s after is right there to ride away with him when it’s over.
As the song ends you find that it’s all just a very cool dream, as we see the young man asleep, covered in dirt and grease. What a dream though, and as he wakes up it would seem the possibilities offered by grandpas old car have become apparent and he quickly begins work on that old car that he initially wasn’t so enthused about owning. In the parting shot we see him rumble back down that neighborhood street, off into the sunset with his girl beside him.
Overall this is a very cool video, great music, great scenery and cool cars. It was beautifully shot and edited. Although it might have been cliche` the only thing we can think of that would have been better at the end would’ve been a stop light race against the import guy that his girl originally took off with, like the finale in Hollywood Knights. Still this is definitely worth the five minutes to check it out.
