It has been a while since we heard much from former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield. But now it looks like the driver is trying to resume his career and clear his name.
In June 2009 NASCAR announced that Mayfield had failed a random drug test but wouldn’t name the offending drug at the time. We later learned it was for methamphetamine, but Mayfield claimed it was a false positive that came from taking anti-allergy drug Claritin-D and doctor prescribed Adderall for ADHD. Things quickly turned ugly, including a court case, until NASCAR announced in July that the driver had again failed a drug test for Meth.
All along Mayfield has denied taking any illegal drugs, but the circumstances around him seemed a lot like a three-ring circus. Among other things Mayfield had a third party docter perform a drug test and found him not only negative but stated that if he did use the amount of meth that NASCAR had in his system that he would be dead or comatose. And then there was his stepmom who said she personally witnessed Mayfield use illegal drugs many times–Mayfield says she was blackmailing him for money. And don’t forget the arrest in 2011 in which the authorities stated they found one-and-a-half grams of meth and a hundred grand worth of stolen goods he was in the act of laundering to support his drug habit. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
It sounds like the script for some cheesy soap opera, but it’s actually real life. And now Mayfield is trying to bounce back from all that and resume his career as a race car driver. His first steps will be a video documentary in which he tells his side of the story. Here is the first installment in which he blames everything on Claritin-D and Adderall but makes no mention of the arrest or other issues.
Mayfield, meanwhile already has at least two Asphalt Modified races under his belt. Here’s a recap of his first time back behind the wheel in competition at Hickory Motor Speedway.
And just in case you wanted a little more to this story, here’s a report from a local newsstation back when all this was originally going down.
It will certainly be interesting to keep track of Mayfield’s re-emergence as a race car driver to see how it all pans out this time around.
