Well, it seems that Top Gear Australia got tired of waiting for news on the next Mad Max installment, Fury Road, and decided to make some news of their own. They putout the call to design team at Ford Australia to come up with the next generation of Max’s cars to use in the movie and have selected two finalists, shown here.

No constraints were put on the designs so, for example the 1973 XB Ford Falcon GT coupe used in the first movie did not have to be recycled. That didn’t stop Simon Brook from using cues from the existing FG Falcon, along with some hints from past movie cars. “I thought it was important to pay homage to the original vehicles,” he told TopGear. I tried to imagine a future landscape where vehicles are created from older models and modified for purpose.”

Iranian-born designer, Nima Nourian, never encountered the Mad Max phenomenon until he left the country as a teenager. He recalls being most impressed by the Interceptor’s supercharger sticking up through the hood. Although his design was inspired by a stealth fighter, Nourian has also included some cues from previous Mad Max cars.

He thinks that some form of futuristic, high performance hybrid drive will provide the motive force for  this Interceptor, perhaps starting with a hydrogen fuelled turbine.

According to Top Gear, after the sketches were done, “…a [Ford] bigwig saw the pics. and instead of firing the lot of ’em, he is taking a few to the States, to see if Ford will actually make one.” Now, wouldn’t that be interesting?
