At the height of the muscle car wars, a few enterprising, dealer-backed racers worked the loopholes of Chevrolet’s COPO ordering system to create a handful of factory-built supercars that weren’t found in any brochure or order guide. They were equipped with an all-aluminum 427 engine dubbed the ZL1. It was similar in specification to the legendary L88 427, but with an aluminum block that saved about 100 pounds.
But that was then, and this is now. So Chevrolet Performance is offering an updated version they are calling the Anniversary Edition 427. This is an aluminum block crate engine designed to mimic the original in spirit but with updates to make it more street friendly. There are screw-in galley plugs, a hydraulic roller cam, forged steel crank and rods, aluminum roller rockers, and HEI ignition and a 770-cfm carb. With 92 octane fuel, Chevrolet Performance says this bad boy is capable of 430 horsepower and nearly 450 lb/ft of torque.
Chevrolet is only making 427 of the Anniversary Edition of the ZL1 and each is selling for a list price of $28,625, although the real-world price will probably be significantly cheaper. You can use the extra money you saved to buy a starter and fuel pump, which aren’t included. Oh, and if your ride isn’t already set up with a zero-balance flywheel, you will need to get one too, because this 427 is internally balanced.
