The Pontiac GTO, although a beloved muscle car back in the day, had a relatively short production run. While the GTO name was used for model years from 1964 through 1974, it was merely a trim package after 1971. As the last year for its own model and the last year of the convertible, 1971 marks a notable time in GTO history. One of the last true GTOs will be up for bid at the upcoming Mecum auction in Dallas, Texas. Now is your chance to own one of the last classic GTOs ever made.
In 1971, only 661 GTO convertibles were manufactured- the GTO up for auction being one of them. In addition to it being a rare convertible, this GTO is also a numbers-matching car, complete with its original 400cui, 300hp engine. The engine is matted to a three-speed, Turbo Hydromatic transmission (TH400). The GTO comes equipped with power steering, power disc brakes, factory air conditioning and working hood tachometer.
The interior includes factory bucket seats and console as well as a sport tilt wheel. Thanks to a complete frame-off restoration, the body is rust free and finished in correct dark green paint. The new ivory convertible top is full working order and matches the ivory interior. The whole package sits atop Rally II wheels.
If you’re looking for a pristine and rare example of the classic “Goat,” look no further than this Mecum auction lot. The car will be up for bid at the Dallas Mecum auction on Friday October 7th, with bids being taken starting at 6:00p.m. The winner of this GTO is sure to get a car they can enjoy for years to come while the value of it continues to appreciate. Happy bidding!
