The Department of Style is a blog-style website with its heart on its sleeve. Behind upholding and exploring traditions and craft, the group’s members have made it their mission to find all sorts of intriguing and unique people to talk to.

TROG_2Recently, TDOS came upon The Race Of Gentlemen (aka TROG) and decided here were a few fellows that could use a spotlight. The Oilers Club, a vintage car organization with its roots dating back to 1947, hosts TROG once a year in New Jersey. Over the course of two days, the town of Wildwood plays host to dozens of vehicles that date from 1934 and earlier, all equipped with parts and components from their proper era as well.

“We have two classes as of now,” explains Melvin Stultz III, the chief organizer of TROG and a devoted hot rod enthusiast. “We have a flathead four-cylinder class, and we have a flathead V8 class.”

The racers themselves are a wild bunch, proud of the work they do and the attention that TROG brings to hot rod culture. Slap-bang automobiles of all makes and models can be seen in lining the coast, with patinas and paintbrushed numbers that call to mind the golden age of stock car racing.

If we’re to take away anything from the Oilers Club and their weekend of old-timey thrills, it’s that we need a chapter out here on the West Coast. Why should the New Englanders be the ones to have all the fun? Find out more by visiting the official TROG website, and stay tuned for more by Liking them on Facebook as well.
