Sunbeam Tiger fans, the holy grail of these Anglo-American hybrids is up for sale from RM Auctions on January 15th in Arizona.
Constructed by coachbuilder Thomas Harrington, Ltd., several of these fastback bodies were built during the sixties but only one ended up on a Sunbeam Tiger chassis, making this a “one of one” car known affectionately among Sunbeam folks as “Harry.”
It was found in England in 1982 and subsequently brought to California where it was shown in as found condition for several years before undergoing a full restoration. Much mechanical work was done by the late Doane Spence of Hollywood Sports Cars fame. It won Second in class at Pebble Beach in 1990. It’s held up well and would now be considered an older restoration.
The car runs a 164 HP, 260 CID Ford V-8 engine with a four-barrel carburetor and four-speed manual transmission. It sits on an 86 inch wheelbase, live axle rear end with discs up front and drums out back. Modifications by Spence to aid reliability and performance include high volume/high-pressure oil pump, new heads for unleaded fuel, electronic ignition, a larger radiator with a five-blade fan and a 350-CFM Holley carburetor.
A tiny English sports car with a yank V-8 is always a great combo. With the added utility of the hatchback and the super rare bodywork, it should fetch a good price as it heads to auction. It’s offered without reserve to the highest bidder.
