Performance Online (POL) has rolled out its new Lateral X Subframe Connectors for the first generation 1967-1969 Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. The Lateral X Subframe Connector kits Use the existing front subframe body mount bolts, so everything works together perfectly.
Today, most passenger cars are a unibody construction for weight savings, space utilization, and frankly, they are easier to manufacture. Fuel efficiency and better crash protection have made this style of platform popular with the public. Before unibody cars became the preferred construction for the mass-market passenger cars – and crossover vehicles for that matter – the GM F-body subframe cars led the way toward the unibody evolution.
While the F-body’s unitized body shell was able to handle forces from the engine and drivetrain of the late 60s, restomods with more power demand more strength. The first generation Camaro and Firebirds have become very popular in modern motorsports. In fact, it is rare to watch an autocross event and not see several of these modded F-body cars.
The Problem And The Solution
The problem with putting a modern, high-powered engine in an early subframe car is structural flex. The car’s body was designed for a less powerful engine and tires and wheels that were not as surface griping as today’s performance tires. Subframe connectors are often used to help transfer the power over a wider area and limiting the body flex.
POL’s Lateral X subframe connectors stiffen the unibody, reduce chassis flex, and strengthens the chassis. This is great for daily drivers but a real necessity for cars designed for performance applications or spirited driving.
The kits are completely bolt-on, with no cutting or floor modifications. Designed to follow the floor contour and attach to front subframe and rear spring mounts or 4-link brackets when used with POL’s rear 4-link kit.
Kit includes:
- Subframe Connectors
- Gloss Black Powdercoated
- 1.250″ x .120” wall DOM tubing
- Mounting hardware
These kits will fit most first-gen F-body except the convertible models. Due to the lack of structural support from having a fully enclosed body, GM added structure to the convertible models. POL currently does not offer this kit for the first-gen F-body convertible models.
