The Oldsmobile 442 was something of a "muscle car's muscle car", and earned a reputation as a street and strip dominator.
Just speak aloud the combination of three common digits in the correct order – “4-4-2” – and you’re sure to capture the undivided attention of any muscle car fan within ear-shot. In the late 1960’s, the 442 started as an optional package for the Cutlass, eventually grew into a stand-alone model that would come to define performance for the Oldsmobile brand. The numerals themselves refer directly to the performance equipment the car came with directly from Oldsmobile: a four barrel carburetor (4) , a 4-speed transmission (4), and a dual exhaust (2). Also, the 442s came with nothing less than a 400 cubic inch Buick, with the later versions having 455 big blocks with 500 stump pulling pound feet of torque.
The guys over a Prestolite Performance recently posted this great write up on the history, options, and accomplishments of the Olds 442, along with a few videos. As you know, Prestolite is home to some of the most established performance brands in America, many of which got their start even before the 442 hit the scene. You might say they know a thing or two about muscle cars. Check out their article here, and let us know if you’ve ever had the privilege of owning or driving one of these beasts in the comments below!
