The IHRA has been through a little bit of turmoil lately with ownership issues, a return to actual competition and now the drag racing league that has long played second fiddle to the NHRA has a new boss.
We’re hoping that’s a good thing. The new man in charge will be Scott Gardner, who is a longtime track owner of multiple racing facilities. Gardner will be replacing Aaron Pollburn, who has led the IHRA since 2004.
When this all went down, Gardner was the owner of three drag racing tracks: Cordova Dragway Park, Eddyville Raceway Park and Cedar Falls Raceway (all in Iowa). He will maintain ownership of Eddyville and Cedar Falls but ownership of Cordova will move to IRG Sports + Entertainment, which is the IHRA’s current ownership group. All three tracks will move to the IHRA sanction, and Cordova will get an IHRA Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series event, which means the series will move to 12 dates.
“It’s a great honor and a huge responsibility to take over the position of President of the IHRA,” Gardner says. “The IHRA brand is something I have always felt was a viable drag racing organization. I am confident I can bring new ideas and renewed energy to the table, while staying true to teh sportsman racing at teh core of the organization.”
We wish Gardner, the IHRA, and–most of all–the competitors the very best of luck in the coming season.
