There are plenty of hot rod reality shows out there. Some flip them for a few bucks, while others build them to see what they may bring on the auction block. And then there is PowerBlock’s Search & Restore. This show is unlike any other ‘build’ show out right now. The host of this show, Tim Strange from Strange Motion, works very hard to keep it real. “We build real hot rods for real people without all the drama,” Tim tells us.
Search And Restore is a show which pulls husbands and wives together on the couch because it’s usually not just a bunch of guys talking about how to build a car. It’s a story of how hot rodders pull together to help others who need it and ultimately change lives for the better.
There are times in everyone’s life when they feel as though life has taken them through a whirlwind of challenges. However, we keep moving forward knowing there are people counting on us to be strong. This was the case with Tom Moore, who many years ago fell off his parents roof and completely shattered his ankle. He has been through over 15 years of surgeries in an attempt to fix it. At one time the doctors even told Tom they would have to amputate his leg below the knee, but he refused.
The first couple of weeks of the build are all about getting the metal and bodywork done. It took hours of sanding, grinding, and blocking to get the car ready. These highly talented builders worked together to add their special touch to the car.
Coming from a hot rodding Mopar family, Tom’s Father and Grandfather both owned Hudsons and in 1995 he finally found his. However, rather than working on his car, he would always volunteer to help others with theirs. Unable to work due to his disabilities and daily pain, his wife pushed hard to provide for the family. Tom’s dream of having a hot rod Hudson seemed as if it would have to wait. At least until his daughter, Taylor, sent a tear filled video to Tim Strange.
Once Tim got a hold of the car he pulled together a team of some of the most talented builders, fabricators, painters and upholsterers from around the country (and Canada) to help bring Tom’s dream alive. “These guys (the build team) are great. There were no egos or attitudes; they just did a great job. It all came together unbelievably nice,” Tim said.
Imagine having a car that you have 4 weeks to build; there are new people every week and it has to be drivable and safe when it’s done. One of the metal fabricators, Voodoo Larry told us, “It’s cool to work with all these guys. It can be a challenge when everyone has their own style, but it’s coming together pretty good.”
After days of cutting, welding and sanding the car starts to take shape and Tim’s vision starts to unfold. That vision is not just about this incredible team or the hudson; it’s also about the family. Stories like this pull on the heart strings of even the manliest man. “This is a one-of-a-kind build. A car I’d like to take home. I think he (Tom) deserves it and is going to be excited when he gets it,” Brad Stark from Paducah, Kentucky said.
Even though the build team completely volunteered their time, they gave 110% of their effort because they knew this car would change Tom's life forever.
You will not want to miss seeing Tim Strange pull a group of hot rodders together to completely change a family by giving one man his dream car.
