Powermaster Performance is the leading name in alternators and starters for your modified or classic ride. You may have some questions about the charging system in your vehicle. Powermaster Performance has plenty of resources to answer those questions on its website’s FAQ page. What we are interested in is calculating the type of alternator we need for one of our projects.
Which Alternator Is Right For me?
Back when our hot rods and classics were new, there wasn’t such a large demand on their charging systems. In fact, most didn’t need to support much more than halogen headlights, let alone a monster stereo system or fuel-injection. This can make it difficult to choose an alternator because there isn’t exactly a one-size-fits-all.
Luckily, our friends at Powermaster cater to pretty much everyone with their vast catalog of various alternators. So they’ve got you covered when asking which one is right and why?
Powermaster has come up with a very simple and easy system to help anyone choose the right alternator for their specific application. Taking a look at the image above, users can calculate the needs of their own systems by simply plugging in the number of amps each accessory draws and selecting an alternator that produces more amps, at idle, than their calculated number.
Our project, for example, needed an alternator capable of handling a modern HEI system, all the lights, stereo, electric fuel pump, and an electric fan. The totaled amp draw worked out to around 85 amps. So, we cruised through Powermaster’s catalog and found part number #378611 that makes 95 amps at idle and 140 on the top end.
You can do the same for your ride. Just head over to the Powermaster Performance FAQ section for all of your charging needs!
