We came, we saw, we clicked on the link–this is Shop Stop, and today’s showcase is on Scott’s Hotrods ‘N Customs out of Oxnard, California. Suspension is the name of the game at Scott’s, and they play it every day with some really awesome and intricate designs for classic cars, and even handle some unique project vehicles, like the one we’ll be discussing shortly.
Founded and owned by Justin Padfield, the 16,000 square foot facility has made a name for itself over the years with its strict attention to detail and stringent build quality standards. Many of the custom projects overseen by Padfield have wound up in the press, like the 1955 Chevy 210 he and his team constructed back before 2008.
A scintillating be-chromed beauty, this red Tri-Five made waves at numerous car shows and events, racking up awards from the likes of SEMA and GNRS. Owned by Scott Loomis, the coupe was a build that came packed with ideas for improvements. It took the shop eighteen months to turn the car from trashy to flashy as they gave the car the pro-street look that Loomis desired.
All the way down to its custom-made 2×4 tube chassis, the car was a complete overhaul. The suspension consisted of Scott’s Superslam series, with an airbagged independent front and airbagged four-link rear, while aluminum shocks covered all four points. The body had its hood lengthened, the cowl shortened, the wheel wells moved forward, deck lid trimmed, and a four-point roll bar installed in the cab.
The interior was the work of Ron Mangus Custom Interiors in Rialto.
Wilwood disc brakes brought the car up a few decades in stopping power, while a beefy drivetrain took care of all things torque and horsepower-related. To be specific, the engine was a custom project from Lambert Enterprises and tuned by Kenny Dutweller, shoving Kinsler injector-powered force to 4.56 gears in a 35-spline rear axle.
It’s a true state-of-the-art build, and one that Padfield and his crew have every right to be proud of. In fact, they’re taking one of their latest projects out on the road with them on a tour this year, to showcase a prototype chassis and suspension system and gauge customer reaction. Be on the lookout for its next appearance at the NSRA Western Street Rod Nationals in Bakersfield.
