Whether they’re complete classics, or brand new supercars, auction houses always draw in some impressive vehicles. This time around, the famous Mecum event was in Las Vegas at the end of last week and throughout the weekend. It drew multiple large collections – one of which was the Ardell Brown Estate Collection.
According to Mecum’s website, the owner, Ardell, was in the automotive industry since he was young, and had owned multiple dealerships, usually specializing in rare collector’s cars. In 2001, he retired and his success afforded him the ability to build his own private collection which, at one point, exceeded 260 cars. His friends and family said his only motivating factor was to “collect what he liked,” and boy, did he have great taste.
Over 130 of his personal vehicles went up for auction this past weekend. Here’s some of our favorites.
1967 Dodge Dart – Sold for $31,900
The collection’s featured Dodge Dart is a Mopar enthusiasts dream. Under its hood is a 400 cubic inch B-series big-block V8 with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and dual-snorkel air cleaner. It supposedly gives off quite an aggressive sound with its ceramic-coated headers and dual exhaust system. The chassis was treated to a set of Hotchkis frame reinforcement and a Dana 60 rear end, putting power to its high-performance BF Goodrich tires through a TorqueFlite automatic transmission.
1956 Ford Thunderbird – Sold for $38,500
With its 213 cubic inch y-block engine, 3 speed manual transmission, classic Ford-style color combination, and some other little tasteful parts, this understated T-bird caught our eye. It features a dual exhaust, finned valve covers, 4-row radiator, and power steering. Its red and white interior colors, Continental kit, porthole hardtop, fender skirts, and wide whitewall tires give off a classic, nostalgic Ford vibe.
1968 Pontiac Firebird – Sold for $31,900
One of few of the older cars modernized for current day highway driving, the Firebird boasts several upgrades from its OEM glory. The 400/350 horsepower V8 features an MSD Blaster ignition system with an MSD Blaster coil, an aluminum intake manifold with a four barrel carburetor, topped off with an Edelbrock air cleaner and valve covers, as well as a dual exhaust system. Its Tremec 6-speed manual transmission and Hurst shifter make for effortless, yet fun driving.
1967 Plymouth Barracuda – Sold for $33,550
Upgraded with its successors larger 340 cubic inch V8, under the hood, this ‘Cuda features an Edelbrock Air Gap intake, Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor, machined X-code heads, Hooker headers, and Flowmaster mufflers. It also received a 4-speed transmission with overdrive and 3.55 rear end, coupled by a custom-built driveshaft. Riding on classic Cragar SS wheels and BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires, this thing was built for performance.
