Making our rounds at the 2015 Goodguys Southwest Nationals, we had the chance to speak to Harry Rockstroh of Casa Grande, Arizona, and his 1931 Ford Model A Pickup, which is a black beauty. Retaining its classic aesthetics, Harry has made a few changes that definitely made this classic stand out even more, which he named “Rockrod.”
“The top has been chopped and it also has bobbed rear fenders,” Harry said. “All that you see was built and painted by yours truly.”
To give the Ford more pep in its step, Harry fixed the classic with a 350-cubic inch Chevy V8 engine, complete with dual quads and aluminum heads. The engine is connected to a Turbo 350 automatic transmission and a rearend from a Jaguar. The chassis is a TCI frame, featuring an independent front end and rack and pinion steering to ease maneuverability.
The Ford sits on American Salt Flats wheels wrapped in meaty BF Goodrich tires. We like what Harry did here with his Ford, showing that you can still keep things classic, even with the help of a few modern touches. The chop is hardly noticeable, but its decked out rearend tells other drivers that this is no ordinary pickup.
Moving away from the lavish customs that were along the aisle, we took a step back to appreciate a more classy custom build, one that is simple, functional, and appealing to both young and old generation hot rod enthusiasts. What do you think of Rockstroh’s Rockrod? Do you feel there is anything he is missing? Be sure to leave a comment or two below.
