It’s not too often that we see an AMX Matador, and we can certainly say that we’ve never seen one like this! Ted Marshal, a resident of central Florida, built this car over the course of about fifteen years. He started the project 27 years ago, finished 11 years ago, and is continuing to modify and upgrade it as he drives it.
Ted did nearly all of the work on this himself, even the custom ground effects, wing, and hood scoop. He made those custom body modifications by shaping foam and covering it in fiberglass. He also smoothed the body by shaving the trim, side marker lights, and door handles. Overall, the efforts he put into the body present an entirely custom look that we’ve never seen before on a car like this.
Of course, it doesn’t just look great, it performs just as well. The drivetrain is made up of a 401 cubic-inch V8 engine with 10:1 compression, Crane camshaft, and ported heads. The intake is an Edelbrock Performer with a Holley Avenger 4-barrel carburetor fueling the whole system and a 727 AMC Torqueflite transmission with a 2,500 stall converter.
The interior is made up of aircraft tweed wrapped over the stock seats and dressed up door panels to match. All around a custom job, the efforts that Ted put into his car can be seen in every aspect of its build. And it is no wonder that Ted picked a Matador for the project, he is a self described AMC aficionado, and has been since the early ’70s when the Gremlin came out. “I looked at the AMCs and imagined what I could change to give them my own touch and make them unique,” Ted told us. And unique this car certainly is.
Every detail of this car has been carefully crafted to get exactly the look that Ted wanted.
While the Matador may not be the car of choice for most hot rodders, we’ve seen custom builds on odd AMCs a few times, and we have to hand it to Ted for stepping outside the box, coloring outside the lines, and coming up with a unique combination that he can be proud of.

A lot of time and effort went into the car, but the outcome is definitely worth while. Here are just a few pictures of the build process.
