Well folks, we’ve found one of the coolest rat-rods you’ll ever see. Not sure exactly what it is about this car that makes it so great, but it could definitely be the confidence that emanates — it’s well built and just damn cool. I mean, it’s a car that has the body (or what’s left of the body) of a 1960 Buick Invicta four door, the frame of an ’87 Toyota pickup, a 1940 Ford front axle, and a ‘20s style exposed front radiator.
This beast of a car belongs to Jeff Cain, of Millen, Georgia. It took nine-and-a-half months to build this rat rod, and Jeff lived in Missouri at the time so it took four-and-a-half months just to get the title! Now in Georgia, it’s titled as 2011 and lists “Ratrod” as the model.
Finding, retrieving, and beginning the build on the Buick.
This crazy cool Buick is powered by a drivetrain that’s just as bad as it looks. The engine is a 1972 or 1973, 455 cubic-inch Buick engine with a stock bottom end with a mild cam. The heads are 1967 430 heads with stage-one valves and a mild port done by Larry at Mexico Performance in Mexico, Missouri. It is fueled by a highly modified Offenhouser dual-quad intake that runs a fuel injection system.
The drivetrain is finished out with a 1967 Buick Rivera switch-pitch T400 transmission, 9-inch Ford rearend out of a van, and a 4-bar rear suspension setup. It’s a highly customized build that is the result of precise engineering and some serious forethought. Not only does it look great, but it also drives really well.
Jeff just took it on a 2,000 mile trip to the Redneck Rumble in Lebanon, Tennessee. During the same trip he also took it to central Missouri to visit friends and family, then Grafton, Illinois, for the Ratrod Build Off, then off to Steelfest at Shaprio Steel in St. Louis, Missouri, and finally all the way back home. Did we mention that he drove it the whole way? It’s one thing to build a wild ride, but putting it on the road for a couple thousand miles makes it even better.
