Imagine buying a 1955 Chevy Nomad for the low price of only $300. Even in 1971 when Ron Pfister of Castro Valley, California, bought his car, that was a screaming deal. He had his eyes set on his dad’s ’55 Chevy delivery, but that didn’t pan out, so he ended up with this Nomad instead, which we think turned out pretty well for Ron.
The car really speaks for itself.
Ron drove it every day to high school and to his first job for about a year when he decided it was time for a paint job. Ron and the owner of the one-man body shop he went to, Mike Schiada, got to work on his car. “We took the car completely apart.” Ron told us. “Then we did all the rust repair which was mainly in the floor areas. This was in 1974 and there weren’t any aftermarket floorboards, so we had to find good ones at a wrecking yard.” He already purchased the original paint for his car, but as they got into the project, he decided to do something a little different.
This is what it looked like years ago before it was setup in its current state.
The car didn’t see more change again until 2002 when Ron decided he wanted to give the Nomad a little more kick. Ron sent a frame to Paul Newman’s Car Creations to modify it so that the frame would accept C-4 Corvette suspension and an LS1 engine along with a 4L60E transmission. The car was only out of commission for about six months when he had it driving on its new platform.
It was in 2011 that the Nomad got an entirely new look. “I had always wanted to go through the Nomad one more time,” Ron told us. “The interior that was in the car since 1975 was from another Nomad I had bought.” It was time for the second hand interior to get a little bit of an upgrade. Ron took it back to Mike Schiada where they tore it down, fixed a few rusty spots, and customized it to what you see today.
Have you ever seen the rear doors on a Nomad open like that?
