Street Feature: David Monsaas’ Classic Built ’70 Duster Throwback

1200-38It’s getting more expensive every day to get a start in musclecars. Even long term projects are getting up there in price and you almost have to drag something out of the woods if you want a good deal — and what you don’t pay for with cash you pay for with labor.

These cars weren’t so expensive many moons ago, but nobody knew back then what they’d be worth today. David Monsaas of Bainbridge Island, Washington, has had his 1970 Plymouth Duster since 1977 and to this day it has just over 64k miles on the odometer.

This Duster is an original 340 cubic-inch four-speed car. While David has made the change over to a 727 automatic transmission that he had built by Scott Dickey, and swapped in a built 340 cubic-inch engine, he still has all of the original equipment in the garage and even left the clutch pedal and linkage in place. He also made a custom bracket for the B&M shifter so he didn’t have to alter the floor.

On top of the 340 cubic-inch engine sits a Mooneyham blower with a Hampton intake that pulls in about 14 lbs of boost. While this engine hasn’t been put on the dyno, his old setup made 426 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. “I don’t know what this one makes,” David detailed, “but it’s got to be more.”

This engine has been improved with a Hughes camshaft, lifters, and rocker arms. David also recently added Edelbrock aluminum heads to help cut down on heat. inside it has Venolia pistons that David bought back in the ’80s. “They’re basically flat top blower pistons,” he said. “This 340 makes a lot of power.”

1200-63He added MSD ignition, twin 450cfm Holley carburetors, a 3,000 stall converter, and 3.50:1 rearend gearing. “It’s running 10:92 at 125 miles per hour in street trim,” David told us. Keep in mind, David bought the whole blower kit decades ago in about 1979. Try to find a blower kit for a Mopar small-block today, and you’ll have a difficult time because we all know that Mopar performance products are few and far between.

This Duster was painted 23 years ago by Robert Lacey, and although the paint is more than two decades old, David is still impressed with how good it looks. The interior has also been upgraded with a custom pentastar on the back seat cover, Auto Meter gauges, and genuine Pioneer Super-Tuner cassette player. How’s that for nostalgia?

Talk about nostalgia: that Pioneer Supertuner is well known by those who grew up in the 1970s, and it was a favorite for under dash music. You can't buy one new today.

David used this as his daily driver when he bought it back in 1977. He built this into what it is today decades ago and it’s a unique tribute to the golden days of musclecars — we’re talking blowers, carburetors, and street races. Even after all these years, David told us, “It still brings joy every time I drive it.” And we agree, it brought lots of joy just seeing it.
